Helfaut
On this location in a limestone quarry the Germans build a very big complex for the storage of the V2
rockets which could be fired from the launching site at Eperlecques. When de allied destroyed the launching site
in 1943, the Germans decide to use this location also as a launching base. In the limestone quarry they cut out
a enormous complex for the storaga, assembly and launching of V2 rockets. The round asseblyhall was 35 meters in diameter and
30 meters high, the hall could be reached by a tunnel in the rocks from 375 meters long, with storagerooms at both sides.
The assemblyhall was protected by a round concrete coupola from 7 meters thick armoured concrete!
In spite of all the work, the Germans never fired one single rocket from this location, because of heavy bombings by the allieds.
At 20 july 1944 the germans stopped with building the complex due to the heavy damage to the coupola due to the very heavy bombs.
Today the complex is a museum (La Coupole).
